National Knowledge Commission (NKC)

  •  National Knowledge Commission (NKC) was constituted on 13th June 2005 with a time-frame of three years, from 2nd October 2005 to 2nd October 2008. 
  • High-level advisory body
  •  By the then Prime Minister of India (Dr. Manmohan Singh)
  • Chairman: Sam Pitroda
  • Dissolved: July 2014 (Modi)
  • Recommendations: 300
  • Set up a National Mission on Libraries 
  • Set up of Indian Institute of Library and Information Science.
  • Modernize library management 
  • Promote Information Communication Technology (ICT) 
  • Facilitate donation and maintenance of private collections 
  • Knowledge Pentagon:

National Mission on Libraries: (NML)

  • Formulated in 2012
  • By Union Ministry of Culture.
  • Launched officially on 2014 (3, February)
  • By president Pranab Mukherjee. (12th Five-year Plan)
  • Recommended by  National Knowledge Commission (NKC)
The scheme consists of four main objectives:
  • Creation of National Virtual Library of India (NVLI).
  • Setting up of NML Model Libraries. (Upgradation of already existing Libraries)
  • Quantitative & Qualitative Survey of Libraries.
  • Capacity Building.
There are six Public Libraries under administrative control of Union Ministry of Culture namely:
  1.  National Library, Kolkata;
  2.  Central Reference Library, Kolkata; 
  3. Central Secretariat Library, New Delhi;
  4.  Delhi Public Library, Delhi; 
  5. Khuda Bakhsh Oriental Public Library, Patna
  6.  Rampur Raza Library, Rampur.
